Oasis Restore is described as ‘England’s first secure school’, with a vision to transform the lives of young offenders via community, education, and rehabilitation. This focus on improving young people’s future prospects via support and learning rather than punishment is an innovative approach to youth justice.

Oasis Restore will care for 49 young people aged 12 to 18, who have been sentenced or remanded in custody by the courts. Individuals will be housed in secure “bedroom” environments rather than cells.

Our reduced-ligature Ryno® bedroom range was selected for these private spaces due to its safe, secure, and damage-resistant features. Ryno beds can be heavily weighted or floor-fixed for immovability. The unique one-piece design ensures fire and water resistance, while the inclusion of securely fixed Ryno bed infill panels removes concealment opportunities.

Additionally, Ryno bedside units and Ryno modular storage offer safe open-faced storage options, with sloping tops and a curved anti-climb design to prevent misuse. Scorpio foam mattresses, known for their tear-resistance and fire-retardant properties, complement this range. Scorpio anti-vandal mattresses are designed with fully welded seams that ensure water resistance and facilitate ease of infection control, making them an ideal choice for challenging environments.

Ryno Bedroom ranges were chosen in Teal, Cool Green and Dusty Blue; colours allowing for ease of zoning particular areas within secure units for wayfinding purposes alongside providing a more homely alternative for what could be considered “institutional” looking greys. Colour theory indicates that blues and greens can help create a therapeutic sense of calm, so the thoughtful decision to use these colours in bedroom spaces could support the creation of a calming effect amongst residents.

Other spaces that required a thoughtful approach were the ‘Sensory Room’ spaces. Design is guided by strict requirement policies, and careful consideration regarding furniture within these spaces is of the utmost importance. Our Boden Donut beanbag offers a safe space that individuals can nestle into; the low seated position in the middle of the Boden Donut also aids in safer de-escalation practices as individuals cannot raise themselves up quickly. The heavy-weight design of the Boden range ensures that these beanbags are not easily mishandled and offers staff peace of mind.

In the main dining area, our heavy-weighted Ryno dining chairs were chosen to accompany our Ryno activity tables, creating a robust and safe contemporary dining range. Our modern Rock range was selected for other dining spaces, offering strength and stability required for secure units while also featuring a sleek and stylish design aesthetic due to its light natural wooden construction

Adjoining these dining spaces are smaller communal lounge areas, furnished with our comfortable Snug Plus modular seating range. This versatile seating range can easily be adapted to fit the shape of a room, used individually, or securely linked together, as demonstrated within this unit. For these spaces, this reinforced seating option was selected in pale blues, upholstered in wipe-clean vinyl, complementing the dark blue soft furnishings and interior design choices within the space. Additionally, Boden beanbags throughout the project provide flexible seating options for recreational spaces, creating contemplative spots within a socially inclusive environment.

Purl Plus armchairs and Purl Plus 2-seaters were chosen for further additional rest areas. Our Purl Plus has a fully enclosed base with inaccessible fixings to prevent tampering along with fixed seat cushions to deter misuse. The feet were chosen in solid birch which adds a sense of warmth to this seating range, and with its curved wrap-around design, Purl and Purl Plus has been constructed to provide a sense of comfort and support. Fabric choices vary throughout the space from cool neutral blues to dark nature-inspired greens that contrast well against pink tones of other seating options.

Robust Harby Plus coffee tables were also chosen for these spaces, with a fully enclosed base design discouraging stashing of contraband, and the tables’ heavily weighted nature ensuring they cannot be easily moved.

Bespoke headboards and fitted cabinetry can be found throughout this project, with Harby Plus TV cabinets a safe option for spaces that require entertainment services. Their shatter-resistant polycarbonate screens, secure ventilation and sloping tops all deter misuse and ensure equipment is safely housed within.

Our projects and installation team were on-hand from start to finish during this sizable undertaking to ensure everything was completed to a high quality and to specification. Communication with our clients has been key to achieving a successful outcome.
