Havenside Ward, Norton Lea

Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LPFT), in collaboration with Vinci Building UK and Sir Robert McAlpine, has delivered a new state-of-the-art adult mental health ward at the Norton Lea site in Boston, Lincolnshire. Officially named Havenside, the 19-bed facility replaces the former Ward 12 at Pilgrim Hospital and forms part of LPFT’s commitment to eliminating outdated dormitory-style accommodation across its inpatient mental health services.

Designed with dignity, privacy and recovery in mind, Havenside provides every patient with their own ensuite bedroom, alongside bright communal areas, therapeutic spaces and direct access to outdoor environments that support wellbeing and rehabilitation. The ward has been carefully designed to create a calm, welcoming and therapeutic atmosphere for both patients and staff. Key features include quiet, sensory rooms for patients requiring peace and tranquillity, landscaped gardens with aromatic planting and carefully considered seating, and thoughtfully positioned family rooms located away from busy ward areas with dedicated outdoor seating for visits.

Pineapple was proud to supply a range of safe, robust and comfortable furniture solutions throughout the facility. Across lounges, communal areas and patient spaces, products including Ryno® Rockers, Ryno® Tub Chairs, Xeon Chairs and Sigma Chairs were selected to provide durable seating solutions that help create a warm, non-institutional environment. Boden Beanbags were also incorporated into relaxation spaces, offering more informal seating areas to support comfort and wellbeing.

In shared living and dining areas, Cirrus Coffee Tables were used throughout to encourage social interaction and support flexible communal spaces. Harby Plus Noticeboards were also installed to enhance communication and engagement within the ward environment.

The outdoor courtyards and garden areas were furnished with a selection of Ryno® outdoor furniture, including Ryno® 2-Seaters, Ryno® Club Chairs, Ryno® Dining Tables and Ryno® Benches. These carefully designed outdoor spaces provide patients with safe access to fresh air and nature, further enhancing the therapeutic environment and supporting recovery and wellbeing.

LPFT chose to work with Pineapple following an extensive engagement process involving more than 30 Experts by Experience, members of the Building Together Focus Group, and other key Trust stakeholders, including ward-based mental health professionals. Participants reviewed and tested a wide range of furniture options and were given the opportunity to rate and recommend their preferences.

It was essential that the furniture selected was appropriate for the environment, robust, and fit for purpose – and Pineapple met all of these requirements.

Alan Pattison, LPFT’s Clinical Operational Estate Lead, said:

“It was important that the furniture chosen was fit for purpose and selected by the people who will be using the environment – our patients and staff.”

He added:

“The service and communication from Pineapple has been excellent, and we highly recommend their products for helping to keep patients and staff safe and comfortable.”

Havenside represents a significant step forward in modern mental health care within Lincolnshire. Through thoughtful design and carefully selected furniture solutions, the project has created a safe, therapeutic and welcoming environment that promotes dignity, comfort and recovery for every patient
