CAMHS centre, Udston Hospital

The space is a testament to all those who worked on this project, creating a safe and welcoming environment that is appealing to patients, visitors and staff alike

NHS Lanarkshire recently opened their new CAMHS centre at Udston Hospital, providing outpatient services to children and young people with emotional, behavioural, or mental health difficulties within the Lanarkshire area.

Reflecting a modern approach to mental health care, the new centre was designed with input from young people and their families and in a departure from the traditional waiting area design comprising rows of chairs, this design focuses on informal arrangements throughout the space facilitated by the modular nature of the furniture.

Ohio Plus and Snug Plus modular seating ranges were used to create smaller, more intimate areas within the larger space. Both ranges are fully reinforced for additional strength and safety, with a reduced concealment enclosed base which makes them perfectly suited to mental health environments. Ohio’s ski foot design allows for ease of movement, meaning seating configurations can be reconfigured as required. The choice of bright orange vinyl brings in a pop of colour against the grey of our Snug Plus range and contrasts nicely against the green interior décor.

Boden beanbags were chosen to create a space for young people to feel comfortable and relaxed. Our Boden beanbags are durable, water-resistant and offer a multitude of soft seating options.

Contessa Extra Large Drum foam shapes were also used within the space to offer an alternative sitting or table space. Their all-foam construction (with no internal frame) helps to provide safety.

A TV screen is safely contained within a wall-mounted Acumen TV cabinet. This reduced ligature range of secure TV cabinets feature a 8mm clear polycarbonate safety screen, providing protection from accidental or purposeful damage, making them an ideal choice for challenging environments.

The space is a testament to all those who worked on this project, creating a safe and welcoming environment that is appealing to patients, visitors and staff alike.
