The Brook - Learning Disability & Autism Unit (LDA)

The Brook is a purpose-built, 10-bed inpatient facility designed to provide specialist care for individuals with learning disabilities and autism within a secure mental health setting. Developed as part of Langdon Hospital, the unit offers a more therapeutic and less institutional environment for those who may find traditional hospital settings overwhelming.

With input from people with lived experience, the unit has been thoughtfully designed to promote recovery, dignity, and wellbeing. Key features include en-suite bedrooms, accessible garden areas, calming communal spaces, and acoustic treatments that create a low-stimulus environment. Furniture and materials have been carefully selected for safety, flexibility, and durability.

The Brook has already received recognition, being Highly Commended in the DiMH 2024 Project of the Year – Future Design award category. Its opening marks a major step forward in delivering compassionate, tailored mental health support within a modern, therapeutic environment.

Furnishings and materials have been chosen to support both function and wellbeing throughout the facility. For example, traditional-style Oriana tables are paired with Eddy chairs — multipurpose, stackable chairs featuring sled legs that minimise floor damage and a hygienic one-piece shell. Made from 50% recycled content, Eddy chairs are both practical and environmentally conscious. Bold chairs with seat pads provide additional flexible seating options.

Our Hush® Acoustic Tiles are installed in specific areas and along corridor walls—places where sound tends to echo and travel. By reducing noise impact, these tiles help create a quieter, more comfortable environment. Paired with Purl armchairs and Rock coffee tables, these communal spaces offer calming areas for individuals to relax or socialise.

Our Ryno® dining tables and chairs are a popular choice for dining and cafeteria spaces, thanks to their exceptional strength, robust stability, and easy-to-clean surfaces. Designed for high-traffic environments, Ryno offers long-lasting durability with a recognisable design—ideal for challenging settings.

Bedrooms feature our Sovie beds, which provide comfort and durability, while Harby Plus secure noticeboards are mounted externally to support communication, personalisation, and staff coordination. In addition, our Fynn Reduced-Ligature Lights offer safe, durable illumination with a design that minimises ligature risks.

We are proud to have worked alongside Kier Construction and Grainge Architects to deliver this modern, purpose-built facility. The Brook stands as a testament to what thoughtful design and collaboration can achieve in mental health care.
