The Adirondack chair is one of the most recognisable seating designs in the world, defined by its slatted back, generous seat platform and wide armrests. Traditionally associated with relaxation and outdoor living, its familiar form helps create a more comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. The Ryno® Adirondack Chair takes these qualities and reimagines them for mental health and other challenging environments, combining a softer, residential-inspired appearance with the strength, safety and durability required for demanding settings.
The chair was developed in association with Brian Giebink, NCARB, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, EDAC, Architect and Director of Behavioural & Mental Health at HDR. Giebink’s expertise brings a practical, human-centred perspective to the development of the Ryno Adirondack, helping balance the needs of robust healthcare furniture with a form that feels familiar, comfortable and less institutional.
That thinking is reflected throughout the design. The sculpted form creates a supportive and relaxed seating position, while subtle sensory ripple detailing on the arms introduces tactility and character. For mental health settings, particularly outdoor courtyards, terraces and secure garden spaces, the chair can help create an environment that feels calmer and more considered while still meeting practical requirements around safety and durability.
Stability is built into the design, with a wide footprint and an 18kg standard weight helping to deter misuse and provide a reassuringly substantial feel. A 62kg weighted option is also available, alongside a hidden hard-floor fixing solution where additional security is required. The wall-saver profile allows the chair to sit closer to walls, supporting more efficient and considered space planning.
Manufactured from seamless, non-porous rotationally moulded LDPE, the Ryno Adirondack is water-resistant, UV stabilised and easy to clean. The material is also 100% recyclable, making the chair well suited to both indoor and outdoor mental health environments.
Strength and stability tested for severe contract use, the Ryno Adirondack combines the familiarity of a design classic with the performance required for challenging environments.
